Democracy in Action: Designing the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC

Few people know that the monument that opened to the public in 2004 is fundamentally different from the original design that won Friedrich St. Florian the national competition in 1997. The evolution of the design provides a fascinating test case of American democracy in action. St. Florian is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Co-sponsored by the Department of Classics, the Department of Art History, The Center for the Study of American Democracy, and the Gund Gallery.
