Blending Realities at the 3D Lab

By Abhigya Koirala ’26

This semester, I had the opportunity to work as a 3D Lab Assistant at the VRC’s 3D Lab in the Department of Art History. My primary responsibility was to familiarize myself with different Blender tools and learn different things one can do with Blender. Apart from the smaller models I made to increase my Blender proficiency, I also worked on a number of different projects, including creating a Minecraft inspired block pillar, a sword model, model of a typical room, and a 3D model of Old Kenyon, which is still in process.

My responsibilities and tasks primarily included familiarizing myself with the different Blender tools and techniques, alongside learning photoshop to edit the renders. With these skills, I then began working on creating a 3D model of the Old K. Throughout this journey, I acquired valuable skills such as using blender to create 3D models, animations, and renders. I also learnt to visualize complex mathematical concepts and surfaces with blender illustrations, expanding my knowledge in 3D design.

One of the coolest things I learned this semester is that many of the tasks that would usually take you a long time to do in Blender can be automated and easily completed with addons, using Python. This has made me a much more efficient Blender user.

Academically, Blender has helped me visualize and illustrate complex mathematical concepts and equations. I have also been able to use Blender to visualize data sets in 3 dimensions. And professionally, as blender is a valuable skill for a number of different professions, including engineering, architecture, and game development, my experience with Blender has undoubtedly helped me gain significant knowledge in these fields and boosted my CV.

Overall, I am very grateful for the opportunity to have worked as a 3D Lab Assistant at the VRC. I learned a lot about Blender and 3D modeling, and I had the opportunity to work on some really cool projects. I would definitely recommend this position to anyone who is interested in learning more about 3D modeling.
